YWCA Greenwich Opens a Nursery

1970s, prior to moving to the new building YWCA Greenwich had a nursery so mothers could attend classes. In 1970, infants to five-year old’s could play in a room donated by the Lunsford Richardson family, while mothers pursued vocational interests, including bridge, sketching class, gardening, decorating, piano lessons or film appreciation. Mary Jenkins ran the nursery in the early ‘70s and Mary Zygmont took it over in the mid-seventy’s.  In 1983, the Town of Greenwich issued the YWCA its first license for preschool.

Dolphins Banquet Begin

1970, earliest known Dolphins banquet. In 1974, the Ed Wilson Award for Sportsmanship was presented to honor the YWCA’s first swim coach.  Ed Wilson came to the dinner and presented the award for several of my early years.

First YWCA Greenwich Dolphins Swim Team

1970 – First YWCA Greenwich Dolphins Swim Team – it was made up of about 40 girls. In 1977 Nick Cavatero became the head coach (42 years ago) During the 1979-80 season he approached the aquatics director, Wendy Blumenthal, about a co-ed team.  They began to recruit boys who were brothers of the girls already on the team.

First Handicapped Accessible Pool in Greenwich

1970 – First pool in Greenwich for women and girls, handicapped accessible. It had hours set aside for rehabilitation use. Doctors were thrilled to have a pool for their patients
